A solving strategy that holds up under pressure

1

Scan first

Sweep the rows and columns quickly. When the rule is obvious, the answer often jumps out — no deep analysis needed.

2

One characteristic at a time

No luck? Examine a single feature — shape, colour, quantity, position, alignment — and check whether a pattern governs it across rows, columns, or both.

3

Test the rule against the answers

Apply your rule to the six options and eliminate. If more than one option fits, your rule is incomplete — there's probably a second rule in play.

4

Don't get stuck

Most timed assessments give you a minute or less per question. If one won't crack, move on and come back at the end with the time you saved.

What is the Raven's Progressive Matrices test?

Raven's Progressive Matrices is a non-verbal test of abstract reasoning and fluid intelligence, first developed by John C. Raven and still published today in several versions — the Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) and the harder Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) being the most common in adult and employment testing. Like Matrigma, each question shows a grid of figures governed by a hidden rule with one piece missing, and you choose the completion from several options. Because it relies on visual pattern logic rather than language or specific cultural knowledge, it's often described as one of the fairest cognitive ability tests available, and is used both in employment screening and in psychological and educational assessment.
